CWU Branches

 Orkney Branch

With one Branch Office (Kirkwall), it could be the smallest Counters Section in the UK, as well as the most northernly.  However, it has always played a full part in the CWU…

Highland Amal

Representing Inverness members, this Branch is another small but vital part of the Northern Territory.

Scotland No5

Scotland No2

The second biggest Branch in Scotland, representing the Capital City and outlying areas, Scotland No 2 stretches as far south as Galashiels.

Glasgow & District Amal

Serving the third biggest City in the UK after London and Birmingham, and with members in Dumfries to the South, and Stornoway to the North, Glasgow is one of the largest CWU Branches in the UK, both in terms of membership and in geographical area.  The former site of the Regional Office, Glasgow has been instrumental in developing Union policy over the years and influencing the working lives of members throughout Scotland.

Newcastle Amal

Stretching from the Scottish Border, and taking in the two North East Cities of Sunderland and Newcastle, this Branch has two of the largest offices in the UK.  Newcastle Amal has a reputation for looking after its minority grades.

North Lancs & Cumbria

Vies with Glasgow for the title of largest geographical area, North Lancs & Cumbria are represented by Andy Tatchell, who is one of the few Counters members in the UK to also hold the position of Branch Secretary.

Durham County Amal

Covering a pircuresque part of the North East, including Consett, Chester-le-Street and Durham, members of this Branch live in an area steeped in history.  Durham County Amal have produced well reknowned Union Reps in the past, including Kevin Storey, former UCW National Auditor.

Darlington Amal

Darlington has two Branch Offices – Northallerton and Darlington.  Politically, the Branch area covers the Constituency of Tony Blair, amongst others.  It is no surprise that the Branch cherishes its political links

Cleveland Amal

In a highly industrialised area on the traditional border between the counties of Yorkshire and Durham, the six offices in the Branch Area have a reputation for participating in the affairs of the union.  Prior to the 1992 reorganisation, Cleveland’s Roy Ward was the UCW Counters Organiser in the former District.

York District Amal

Given that it has five Branch Offices, York covers a huge geographical area, spanning from the coastal resorts Scarborough and Bridlington, to the historic City of York and the town of Harrogate, and as far south as Selby.

Hull & East Ridings Amal

This Branch covers three very different offices.  Jameson Street is a typical City Centre office, whilst Bransholme has traditionally served a high proportion of Benefits customers.  Beverley is different again, set in a picturesque country town.

Leeds No1

Covering the two cities of Leeds and Bradford, Leeds No1 has the largest Counters Section in the North East, and is the site of the former North East Regional Office (Another impressive Post Office building lost to the developers)

Merseyside Amal

Liverpool has always had its own unique personality, passion and social conscience.  Merseyside Amal shows that this tradition continues within the CWU, and gave to the Union its General Secretary Billy Hayes, its Senior DGS, Tony Kearns, as well as the late Arthur McGuinness (both Tony and Arthur came from the Counters side of the Union)

Greater Manchester Amal

The largest Counters membership in the North, and well represented over the years by a succession of dedicated representatives, Greater Manchester Amal takes in a wide area, including Bolton, Stockport and Oldham.   With Manchester being the site of the former Regional Office, the Branch have made sure over the years that the CWU is well involved in influencing decisions that matter.

North East No1

Now with only two Offices left, North east No1 still represents members in the two different counties of South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.  With the major fishing port of Grimsby on the coast, and the Yorkshire City of Doncaster inland, North East No1 build on these cultures to give proper representation to its members.

South Yorks & Dist Amal

The crooked spire of Chesterfield is a stones throw away from Future Walk, formerly Chetwynd House.  Inspired by former MP and Postmaster General Tony Benn, Chesterfield showed that Head Office did not have to be in London to be successful.  The Branch has four Branch Offices, in Sheffield, Chesterfield, Barnsley and Rotherham.
